CHICO, Calif. - During the Christmas Preview in Downtown Chico, local game designers Mike Martin and Phil Boden unveiled a new golf-oriented board game entitled ParOut Golf: The Links at "Pen"Hurst to the public. The game was designed, printed and assembled using local artists and resources, including contributions by illustrator Steve Ferchaud, and production by Chico print company Wizard Graphics. Assembly was done in-house by Martin and Boden. Locally owned Bird in Hand is the first store to carry the product.

ParOut Golf: The Links at "Pen"Hurst is a portable golf game that can be played by children and adults, up to four players at a time. The game mechanics are simple, and only involve wet-erase pens and a laminated booklet depicting an 18-hole golf course. Players must move the tip of a pen from the tee-box to the hole in the fewest amount of "strokes". The game's challenge is that all strokes must be made with eyes closed while simultaneously avoiding obstacles such as trees, rocks and cliffs, and hazards such as sand, water and out-of-bounds areas.

The game has been well-received, and has been the topic of two write-ups in the Chico Enterprise Record, including a front-page feature article. Since its initial launch on November 18th, over 450 of the games have been sold in and around the Chico area.

"We wanted to create a Golf game that would bring whole family together," says Mike Martin, the game's co-creator. "ParOut Golf can be played at the kitchen table, in the back seat of the car, virtually anywhere. If you can close your eyes and draw a line, you can play!"
